Dip In With Chaz Howard: Dip Model & Customer

Dip In With Chaz Howard: Dip Model & Customer

You might recognize Chaz from our hair types page with his Type 4 curls.  What you might not know is that Chaz was voted Best Hair in our High School growing up, and it's really not hard to see why. Just look at those curls!   Dip: Was there one moment that triggered your move into being plastic free (or less plastic blind) Chaz: Yes, watching countless documentaries of sea animals being tangled in plastic waste, and worst. There’s this one video of a turtle that had a plastic straw stuck in its nose that has stayed with me for a long time. It was then when I made a conscious decision to do better.

What's your hair care attachment style?!

What's your hair care attachment style?!

Don’t get me wrong, I love my hair. But when I know wash day is coming up, I mentally prepare myself. My hair texture requires a gentle hand and time to pre-poo, wash, condition (I leave it in for at least 30 minutes. . . I use this as a snack break), rinse, and style with my various curly creams and potions. I need to have a patient hand when detangling and a line-up of podcasts for the entire process.

Your Shampoo Bottles Are Not Causing The Ocean Plastic Problem. Here’s Why That Matters

Your Shampoo Bottles Are Not Causing The Ocean Plastic Problem. Here’s Why That Matters

Most shampoo bottles are landfill-bound, not ocean-bound, so be wary of marketing campaigns that automatically tie recycled plastic or plastic-free alternatives as “ocean-friendly”.  You still need to consider all the plastic around the bottle too, including the plastic film used for palletized goods (cling film literally lasts a millennia before it degrades!) Our plastic problem goes way beyond what we throw out: it goes back to the amount of virgin plastic we create, the inefficiency of recycling the plastic we already have, and the “on-demand” consumeristic mindset that makes this type of throwaway plastic in such high demand.

Review Pollution & Why We Don't Participate in "Buying Authenticity"

We believe in an intelligent consumer.  We think that people can sniff out that kind of inauthenticity a mile away now.  As for us here at Dip? We just try to make really great products you want to tell your friends about. That real human connection–and all that gritty, “unsavory” parts that come with it–are what make it genuine. We don't pay for likes, reviews or any other inauthentic marketing.  If that means we grow slower, then so be it.  We are cool with that.

Small Business Spotlight: Dip in with Rise Up Retreats & Kassia Meador

Women friendships (and the shared passions that go with them) are an untapped power source in our industry. These types of friendships can spark some amazing things, and going forward, Kassia and I are ready to put those to good use.  So this is the meet-cute story of how Dip was built with human connection, and not corporate emails, conference tables, & phone-tag. We invented a new kind of "board meeting". We met with surfboards in the wild: your friendly neighborhood Dipette, Kassia Meador, and the badass crew from Rise Up Retreats.

What to do if you Dip bar breaks earlier than expected....

Why do bar things happen to good people?! At the end of the day, and the end of the bar-- the glorious days of a fresh bar feel so long ago...   Don't fret. Here is what to do if your bar breaks: 1. Put the 2 pieces in a nylon sock or stocking and continue using on your merry way. 2. If you're not into putting nylons on your head (we don't blame you) & want your bar experience back, it's time to get a little crafty. Instructions: melt bars in a saucepan over very low heat  don't let it burn & stir constantly remove from heat when first melted pour in a lined vessel or silicone baking mold to pop it out.   Simple as that! We wouldn't suggest microwaving the pieces.  Instead, think of it like melting chocolate. Easy peasy. -The Dip Crew.

No hair texture left behind: creating an all-textures welcomed culture

No hair texture left behind: creating an all-textures welcomed culture

Dip deserves a slow clap moment, because it’s about time that there’s a quality, sustainable product that is good for your hair and the environment.  Let’s keep in mind that until recently, sustainable beauty was not very colorful (literally and figuratively) in how it was marketed. Aside from crunchy packaging that came in fifty shades of beige, there was a lack of diversity in the faces and hair textures we saw representing these beauty brands.

Why Refill Is The New Record Store (And Why That Matters)

Why Refill Is The New Record Store (And Why That Matters)

Record stores, on paper, were just another shop trying to stay afloat. In person, however, they were cultivation grounds for something entirely different and beautiful. They were a place to slow down, to reminisce with music you already loved, or discover new artists that sometimes pulled you in a whole new direction in life. And, of course, they were always staffed by people who loved the art (not just the job).
